Startup Rocket: Founder Story, Ilja Amnell

In spring 2026, Tribe Tampere organised Startup Rocket, a 12-week incubator programme for 15 early-stage startups. The programme was part of a development project funded by the Council of Tampere Region through AKKE funding, aiming to strengthen early-stage entrepreneurship and develop new approaches to startup support.
As part of the project, we're sharing stories from founders who participated in the programme. Through their own words, these stories offer a glimpse into the experiences, challenges and milestones of building a startup.
In this Founder Story, Ilja Amnell from LINJA shares his journey so far, enjoy!

Becoming an entrepreneur without a plan
Entrepreneurship has been part of my life in one way or another since childhood. I grew up in a family where my stepfather was an entrepreneur and my mother later made a career change from teaching to running her own business. I think that planted the idea pretty early on that maybe one day I could build something of my own too.
The idea of becoming an entrepreneur developed gradually over the years while I was studying business administration, accounting and eventually international business. But the real spark came when I decided that I wanted to build a career in an industry I genuinely cared about. For me, that was music.
It was the summer of 2023 when I started talking to artists about what they needed help with. Almost everyone gave me the same answer: they needed more gigs. At the time, I was working in sales at a technology company and I figured that selling couldn't be all that different, regardless of what you're selling.
Well, I was wrong.
I didn't really know what I was going to do or how I would get there. Would it be booking gigs for artists or something completely different? All I knew was that I wanted to make a living in the music industry.
So I went online, filled out the company registration forms and started my own business. There wasn't much more of a plan than that. No proper business plan, no existing clients, no big strategy and definitely no real understanding of cash flow. Just the idea that this was what I wanted to do.
And that's how my entrepreneurial journey began.
It didn't take long to realize that entrepreneurship isn't just about having the freedom to do things your own way. One of the biggest challenges has been building my own name and credibility completely from scratch in an industry that relies heavily on personal networks. When you don't have established contacts, references, or a recognizable brand behind you, you have to knock on quite a few doors before someone even opens one, let alone invites you in.
What surprised me most about booking shows was how the industry actually works and just how important relationships are. Selling a gig is definitely not a walk in the park, even if you already have experience in sales. Coming from the technology industry, I was also surprised by how outdated and complicated many of the processes and tools in the music business still are. I was used to technology making things easier and more efficient, but in the music industry, a surprising amount of work is still being done manually.
The music industry isn't exactly the easiest place to build a stable income either. Competition is tough, there are incredibly talented people everywhere and financial margins can be pretty tight. Building a sustainable livelihood has taken time, patience, quite a few grey hairs, and above all, building those all-important relationships.
Some of my first lessons came almost immediately after registering my company. My phone started ringing with all kinds of businesses trying to sell me services. Some of them were questionable operators, and I actually fell for one of them. That experience taught me to be much more careful about what I agree to. If there's one piece of advice I'd give to anyone starting their first business, it's to always get everything in writing before agreeing to anything over the phone.
Along the way, I've also gained a much better understanding of what it actually takes to run a business and how money flows through the economy. Employing yourself is surprisingly expensive. Even a small limited company has ongoing expenses that need to be covered and on top of that, you somehow have to generate enough revenue to pay yourself a salary. I've also seen how much a first-time entrepreneur is expected to figure out independently and how limited the practical support from the public sector can sometimes be.
Still, the best part of entrepreneurship has been exactly what attracted me to it in the first place: freedom. The freedom to experiment, innovate, and do things my own way without having to wait for someone else's permission or approval.
Of course, there's another side to that freedom. When you get to make all the decisions, you're also responsible for all of them. Freedom, responsibility, and obligation really do go hand in hand.
One of the most memorable moments was definitely the first time I was able to pay myself a salary from my own company.
And oh man, did that feel good, seeing the money arrive in my bank account with my own company's name as the sender!
It was a pretty concrete reminder that something was actually working. All those hours, the uncertainty and the constant learning were finally starting to pay off.
What has probably surprised me the most about entrepreneurship is the pace at which you have to learn new things. One day you're dealing with contracts, the next with finances, then technology and suddenly you're trying to understand something you didn't even know existed a week earlier. And somehow, you're supposed to find time to actually generate revenue and develop the business at the same time. Not to mention having a personal life. The hours in a day disappear pretty quickly.
Along the way, I've learned a lot about persistence and prioritization. You simply can't do everything at once and not every exciting idea needs to be turned into reality immediately, no matter how brilliant it might seem at the time. I've also learned to accept that you don't have to know everything before getting started. What matters more is being willing to ask questions, figure things out and most importantly, just give them a try. That's often how you find the answers you're looking for and broaden your perspective.
At one point in my entrepreneurial journey, I joined the Startup Catalyst programme. At the time, I was juggling my own work, clients, and the everyday challenges of running a business. Startup Rocket felt like a natural next step and gave me the opportunity to build on the ideas and direction I had already started developing during the previous programme.
Through Startup Rocket, I've had the opportunity to refine my strategy, challenge my ideas, develop my business, pitch, network, and change direction when needed. I've also learned to approach building a business more systematically and gained a better understanding of what it actually takes to grow a company.
And of course, one of the biggest things to come out of it: LINJA's founding team came together during Startup Rocket.
One of the most valuable parts of the programme has been the peer support. It's been reassuring to realize that other entrepreneurs are dealing with many of the same challenges, even when their companies and industries are completely different.
What I'll remember most, though, are the people. Both the other participants and the people I've met through events and opportunities connected to the programme, including the ARCTIC event, pitching sessions and other gatherings.
One particularly fun memory is from a FiBAN pitching event, after which we all headed to the sauna. It was pretty funny how quickly things went from a somewhat formal investor event to a relaxed evening of hanging out and enjoying the sauna.
Tampere. Sauna Capital of Finland, indeed!
It's moments like these that stick with you. I'm sure I'll stay in touch with many of the people I've met for a long time and not just professionally.
Startup Rocket has also helped me better understand the role of artificial intelligence in business. I've gained a much clearer picture of how AI can make companies more agile and efficient and what other opportunities it can create when people have more time to focus on other things.
But perhaps the most important thing I've gained from Startup Rocket is stronger confidence in what I'm building and the vision behind it. The programme has helped me strengthen my own skills and become more confident in my identity as an entrepreneur and founder.
Being able to test ideas, receive feedback, and see that there's real potential in my own ideas has been incredibly valuable. It's also reinforced something important for me: I can do this, and I know what I'm doing. At the end of the day, so much comes down to believing in yourself and trusting what you're capable of.
A special thanks belongs to everyone behind the programme and the wonderful people of the Tribe community!
Right now, we're at a pretty exciting turning point.
We've got a small but spirited founding team building LINJA, with the goal of making organizing live shows easier and more profitable for everyone involved in the live music industry. We want to rethink how live shows are discovered, booked, and produced.
In practice, we're building technology that reduces unnecessary manual work and gives artists, venues, and industry professionals better tools to focus on what they do best: creating unforgettable live shows and events.
Looking at the bigger picture, our goal is actually pretty simple: to bring more people to live shows and closer to live music. The easier and more financially sustainable it is to organize shows, the more of them can happen.
Looking back, it's pretty funny to think that all I originally wanted was to find myself a job in the music industry. Now we're building something as a team that aims to make life easier for other people working in the industry and that could potentially have an impact on the whole industry.
I honestly had no clue I'd end up here when I was filling out those company registration forms.
We're currently working on closing our first funding round, which would allow our team to dedicate more time and energy to developing the company.
We're already piloting the platform with real users, collecting feedback, and developing the product based on what we learn. The goal is to enter 2027 with a solid foundation and the best possible starting point for growing the business.
There's still a lot of work ahead and nobody knows exactly where all of this will lead. But maybe that's one of the best things about entrepreneurship. And I've got a feeling we're heading in the right direction.
Now it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work, because the only way to make things happen is by doing! :)

Itsensä työllistäminen on yllättävän kallista. Samalla on tullut huomattua, kuinka paljon asioita aloitteleva yrittäjä joutuu selvittämään itse ja kuinka rajallisesti konkreettista tukea julkiselta puolelta on saatavilla.
Tampere. Sauna Capital of Finland, indeed!

Itsensä työllistäminen on yllättävän kallista. Samalla on tullut huomattua, kuinka paljon asioita aloitteleva yrittäjä joutuu selvittämään itse ja kuinka rajallisesti konkreettista tukea julkiselta puolelta on saatavilla.
Tampere. Sauna Capital of Finland, indeed!
